The Mughal dynasty, which had once ruled India, had been reduced to mere figureheads by the British. Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor of India, was one of these figureheads. His reign was characterized by a lack of power and influence, but his symbolic importance to the Indian people was immense. In 1857, a group of Indian soldiers rebelled against their British overlords in what became known as the Indian Mutiny. The rebellion spread quickly, and soon many Indians flocked to the banner of Bahadur Shah Zafar. Although he was hesitant to support the rebellion at first, Zafar eventually gave his approval, hoping to restore the Mughal dynasty to power.
